In order to guard against placing the chest leads at slightly different positions in patients requiring frequent sequential ECGs, such as patients following cardiac surgery and patients with an acute coronary syndrome, the ECG technicians will often use non-toxic vegetable dyes to mark the location of the chest leads on the chest. They will also attempt to record the sequential ECGs with the patient in the same position so that the relationship between the heart and the recording leads will remain constant.
