First, a word about QRS terminology. The Q wave is defined as the initial negative deflection, occurring without any preceding component. The R wave is the first positive component and may, or may not, be preceded by a Q wave. The S wave is the negative component that follows an R wave (a negative component occurring without a preceding R wave is referred to as a QS wave) and an R' wave is a positive component that follows an S wave.
