Although many of the principles which apply to recording electrical activity directly from the surface of individual myocardial fibers or from the surface of the heart itself apply to recording electrical activity from the body surface, there are several important differences. The electrodes used to record the information from the body surface are further from the heart than are electrodes placed on the cardiac surface itself. This is particularly true for electrodes placed on the limbs.
