The resting membrane potential (RMP) of the cells in the center of the ischemic zone (shown in green) will be depolarized (i.e. will become less negative) by the increase in extracellular potassium (K+E) (shown in yellow) whereas it will remain at its normal value, around -85mV, in the non-ischemic zone because the extracellular potassium concentration in this zone will not change
